Book Marketing 101

Saturday, July 13, 2013

by: Jeremy M. Hoover
Francine Silverman. Book Marketing from A-Z (InfinityPublishing.com, 2005). Trade paperback. 400 pages. $18.95 US.
For beginning authors, book promotion is the key to success. Whether an author self-publishes or is published by a major house, most often that author needs to market her book herself if she wants there to be any chance at all of it being successful. Large publishing houses are too concerned with promoting the next blockbuster to focus even on mid-list titles, and smaller publishing houses usually don’t have the resources to commit to marketing their titles. Even worse off are those who self-publish, because when they receive their books, they are on their own. Any marketing that happens, happens because of their efforts, and their efforts alone.

What is a new author to do? He can sit back and hope that his book sells somehow, or he can put money into a marketing plan and hope that plan is successful. But without a marketing background, that money can be wasted quickly. As a result, many authors don’t market out of fear of loss and uncertainty, and sell far fewer books than they should.
Into this void comes a wonderful book – Book Marketing from A-Z by Francine Silverman. The sub-title explains it all: “More than 300 authors share the peaks and pitfalls in promoting their books.”
Silverman hasn’t so much written this book as she has edited it. She is the successful author of two books, as well as the owner of a very influential book promotion newsletter (http://bookpromotionnewsletter.com). Over a couple years of publishing her newsletter, she has collected marketing success stories from many authors, and, combined with her own expertise, has put it all together into an excellent resource.
This book contains everything a new (or even experienced) author needs to begin marketing. Authors might be surprised to learn that there are many free things they can do to market their books! For example, I was surprised at how many authors related that something as simple as handing out bookmarks or pens stamped with their website and book name resulted in much publicity and many sales.
The book is comprehensive—arranged alphabetically, Silverman covers such topics as the importance of good reviews, what to do (or not do) at book signings, how to brand yourself, how to tie-in with holidays or movies, how speaking engagements can help a career blossom, and how to send out press kits. There are two huge sections on using Internet technology (web sites, ezines, e-groups, etc.) and newsletters to build a following. In my view, these two sections are the most informative sections of the book.
Silverman has produced a timely, comprehensive, and very helpful book that new and expert authors will return to time and again as they build their writing careers.

Protect Your E-book Files!

by: Wayne Perkins
Title: Protect Your E-books Files!
Perkins Failsafe System for Protecting Your Fame and Fortune

Three years ago I was giving my first E-book keynote speech before the Arizona Book Publishing Association, when one of the esteemed publisher members asked me a very pointed question.

"What happens if someone steals your file and sells it or gives it away all over the Internet?"

Until I was asked that question I thought I was Sutter striking gold in California. "How do you keep people from stealing your work?"

Beads of perspiration formed on my face and hands. I had cottonmouth. This is a bad dream. Why didn't I think of this before?

My mind immediately regressed to conversations with other professional speakers relating horrifying incidents where they discovered their "signature story" was being retold.

I thought about the many times I heard professional speakers telling Dr. Charles Jarvis's special Little Bird story without giving credit to Dr. Jarvis

I wondered how much easier it would be to take the Little Bird story as a file formatted in a common program like Microsoft Word for windows and then spread it to many thousands or even millions of people through e-mail.

Do you think that can happen? I think so.

Over the last 3 years many companies have become involved in creating encryption techniques that protect your e-book files from theft.

However, none of the encryption techniques are fail-safe. In fact many times when you download an encrypted book, the files are so huge and difficult to open that you end up canceling your order.

I was recently giving a teleseminar and an attendee asked a most common question.

The question was, "how to I keep someone from stealing my -e-book?

I decided to answer the attendee's question with a question.

Why do you care if they steal your e-book?

She replied" Because I will lose money."

That is when the light bulb went off in my brain. Companies that are spending all that money and putting in all that effort to encrypt e-books are throwing their money away. They are protecting people from opening e-books which really isn't' the major concern.

The problem is protecting the authors from the potential loss of fame and fortune.

Telling Dr. Jarvis's Little Bird Story without his citation isn't' the problem. The problem is in the potential loss of Dr. Jarvis's fame and fortune due to telling his story.

The loss of your e-book files represents a potential loss of your fame and fortune.

You lose no inventory if someone steals a digital file. Once you complete an e-book and post it on-line you automatically have 6 Billion copies in print. You have enough inventory for every man, woman and child on earth.

If one person reads your e-book and does not pay for it you may have one fan. If 100,000 people read it for free you may have a 100,000 fans.

A question I have is can you earn more money and have more fame with one fan or with 100,000 fans?

Over the last few weeks I have successfully completed the best e-book encryption system ever devised and it is yours absolutely free.

This Encryption system will allow virtually anyone to open and read your e-books, and yet this system will protect your fame and fortune.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---The Perkins E-book Fame and Fortune Encryption System---Version 4.1
PEFAFES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Components of the Perkins E-book fame and fortune encryption system:
PEFAFES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. You need an e-book. An e-book can be 5 page or 500 pages long. You are the expert in your field. You get to call the shots on e-book size.
You will advertise how to purchase additional copies of your e-book as well as how to purchase the Infoproduct mentioned later.

2. You need a tasty article. This article will be related to your e-book. The purpose of the article is to entice the reader to purchase your e-book. (Component #1)

The web address where article readers may find and purchase your e-book will be included.

3. You need an Infoproduct. An Infoproduct is an expansion of the article or extra information you forgot to include in your e-book. If your Infoproduct is exactly the same content as your article you may want to add special examples or additional Internet resources where web visitors may receive more information. Include many of the free resources on your own website. You will advertise your e-book price and your infoproduct price in the infoproduct text.

Here is your free copy of the revolutionary PEFAFES system.

---------------------------------------------------

Example of the Encryption System

--------------------------------------------------

For this example assume you are a public speaker who talks on the topic of "How to Win At Gambling"

You have a website titled " Vegas-Gambling.com"

The title of your e-book is: 101 Winning Poker Strategies" Price $9.95

Create an article that you will post to major websites on the Internet. You will offer your article free to webmasters in return for a link to the description page of your book located on your website or a website that fulfills your e-book orders.

Title this article "3 Ways to Win at Poker."

Let's say your e-book title is: "101 Winning Poker Strategies" Price 9.95

Your book is loaded with references about you, your contact information and hot links to places on your website for more information about gambling and it includes references to your other e-books, consulting services and detailed contact information.

After you create your article "3 Ways to Win At Poker" with the usual 4 line author bi-line at the bottom of the page, create another file based on the article titled "3 Great Ways to Win At Poker." Make sure you list resources, references and links over to your website or to more product pages and more information about you.

This file will be called your "infoproduct" or information product.

If you are lazy and just want to use the exact same file as you used as your free article, that is okay as well.

Once you understand how the encryption system works, you will understand how beneficial it is to allow people to purchase your articles.

Assign a price of $3.95 to your Infoproduct.

Now for a summary of what you have so far.

1. Article...used to market your e-book that you give away for FREE

2. E-book ...which is your basic product. You will charge $9.95 each

3. Infoproduct that you advertise in your e-book selling for $3.95

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now here is the good stuff and this is why I make sure I format in Microsoft Word and Adobe PDF. I also keep all of my files smaller than 500 kilobytes in size to allow delivery via e-mail without the use of Zip files or other confusing helper programs.

My newest products are all text files that are small in size and can be read on any computer without any special software requirements.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You now have your encryption system in place

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Picture this...At the current time, you are watching a 2-hour hockey game.

While you are watching TV an Internet surfer, Jack Sprat, locates your website article.

(1) Jack Sprat reads the article about your 3 gambling tips and thinks it's great.

(2) He goes to your website and purchases your e-book for $9.95

(3) He loves it so much that he sends it to his whole "Gamblers Anonymous" data base with over one million strong. This takes place in the time span of one hour! Jack Sprat knows nothing about copyright laws. He is just so happy to share your expertise with his friends!

Over one million e-mail recipients receive the attachment but only 10% or 100,000 people read about your tips. The other 90% just hit the delete key on their computers. They are afraid of opening any e-mail attachments.

Over 100,000 read your e-book for free and 10% or 10,000 readers are so moved that they decide to click on over to your website and purchase your "Infoproduct" for only $3.95 each.

(Remember that your infoproduct is your free article with a price tag on it.

Your gross sales for one hour's work = $39509.95

(1) 0 X 100,000 = $0.00 Your E-book Sales
(2) $9.95 X 1= $9.95 Jack Sprat's E-book sale
(3) $3.95 X 10,000= $39509.95 Infoproduct sales

You made $39509.95 in one hour. Since your E-book ordering system is on automatic pilot, you never talked to a single customer or took product out of your inventory.

You are halfway done with the hockey game and haven't even turned on your computer.

You also have 100,000 People talking about you at this very minute.

Are you excited yet?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your fame and fortune encryption system continues on...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Remember those 10,000 people who paid $3.95 for the special report after reading your e-book for free?

One person out of that group, Sylvia Wiss is the only dishonest person out of the 10,000 . She purchased the special report for $3.95 and decides to send your $3.95 special report to one million of her friends. She sends it to the "National Association for the Preservation of Gambling" ...one million strong. Sylvia too, is Internet savvy and blasts out your Infoproduct to a million people in only one hour.

Like in the above example only 10% of the group or 100,000 read it. The rest consider it Spam or e-mail that should be deleted. 10% of that group or 10,000 love your Infoproduct. They love it so much that they purchase your featured e-book that was advertised in the Infoproduct that was just stolen. Remember your "101 Winning Poker Strategies" Price 9.95?

Sylvia's efforts have resulted in 10,000 E-books, selling at $9.95 each, which equal $99,500 plus the original $3.95 sale of the Infoproduct to Sylvia Wiss.

Congratulations to your top salespeople!

Jack Sprat 's efforts created $39,509.95 in total sales. The total time elapsed is only one hour.

Sylvia Wiss brought you $99,503.95 in a time frame of one hour
Your total sales for the day: $139,013.90 The total time that expired during this process is just two hours

I wonder how much money you will have earned in the next 40 hours?

There is one more question I will leave with you to think over. At what point do you contact an attorney and ask about copyright violations by Jack and Sylvia?

While you are thinking that over, I am going to see if there is anything else I can watch on television.

My E-book Fame and Fortune Encryption System is still operating.

Good luck.

Your Book is a Business

by: Dr. Jamie Fettig
Think like a businessperson, not an author.

Once the final draft is written, you’re no longer an author. You’re an entrepreneur with a product to sell, and it’s critical that you start thinking that way. Instead of spending your time on editing and proofreading, you’ve got to invest your time in marketing activities. That means finding the answers to three critical questions:
a. Who is your audience?
b. What will compel them to purchase your book?
c. What methods should you use to reach them?

At this stage, you need to think about capturing leads, producing sales material, getting testimonials and positive reviews, and arranging publicity events. Your focus should be on all the ways you can create awareness of your book.

The best way to get started in thinking like a businessperson is after your final draft is done but before you go to print, sit down and write out the answers to these questions:

• What is my marketing budget?
• What resources do I have in place already?
• What people do I know who can help me?
• What are my sales goals for the year?

Keep your expectations realistic.

The average self-published book sells only about 3,000 copies, and the average book issued by a publisher sells only a few thousand more. For every bestseller, there are hundreds of books that sell moderately and disappear. So you’ve got to keep your expectations realistic, or you’ll set yourself up to get discouraged and quit trying to market your book.

Rather than worry about the overall number of copies sold, I recommend to people that they set their goals, especially for a first book, like this:

a. Monetary goals. For most authors, selling enough copies to break even is a very worthwhile goal. If you can do that, you’ve done great!
b. Career goals. Your book might give a big boost to your speaking career, medical practice or other endeavor.
c. Publicity goals. Your book could position you as an expert in your field, so that you get invited on radio programs, TV, speaking engagements, etc.
d. Publishing goals. Maybe your book is noticed by a publisher who wants to re-release it, or you are offered a chance to write future books.
e. Networking goals. You meet agents, designers, journalists and others who could be wonderful contacts for the future.

Your expectations for your book should not be centered on copies sold. Instead, focus on developing and executing a brilliant marketing and PR plan, making key contacts, and finding ways to create value for readers, for the media and for organizations who might make big bulk purchases. If you focus on those things, sales will take care of themselves.

Concentrate on meeting all 5 types of goals. That way, even if your sales are only moderate, but you do brilliantly in getting publicity and making contacts, you can consider your book a success.

Have a solid, long-term marketing plan.

Before you ever get close to even finishing your first draft, sit down and map out the basics of your marketing and promotional plan. The key questions you’ll need to answer:

• What is my marketing budget?
• When should my book be ready?
• Who is my audience and what need does this book meet?
• What will my price point be?
• How many copies do I need to sell to break even?
• How many copies do I want to sell?
• What marketing channels will I use to reach my readers?
• What relationships can I leverage to make bulk sales?
• What relationships can I leverage to get press coverage?
• Who will design my Website?
• Do I need a marketing staff?
• Will I do an e-newsletter?
• Will I hire a distributor or ship the books myself?
• Do I want to be in the bookstores?
• Will I do “guerilla” marketing?
• What ancillary products can I produce (tapes, CDs, etc.)
• How can my seminars/consulting/current business support this book?

That’s a lot of material, but it’s all important. Take a couple of months and figure it out. You can also cut some time off your learning curve by learning from others who have done it already.

How to Utilize Galleys for Best Results

by: Chris Willitts
Once your book hits bookstore shelves, you've got approximately eight months to produce sales. If your book doesn’t prove itself after the eight months, it will almost certainly get pulled. So the time to do your marketing is way before your book even thinks about hitting the shelves.Thousands of booksellers and librarians found their purchaseing decisions on reviews. But the major review journals (i.e. Library Journal and Publishers Weekly) will only review your book if you send them a bound manuscript – a.k.a. bound galley - three to four months in advance of your targeted publication date.

A galley is a compilation of unbound signature pages of your book. The contents of a galley can be photocopied or printed from your computer.

A bound galley is a galley that has been bound into book form. Bound galleys are generally produced after a manuscript has been typeset but before proofreading.

If you plan on sending out more than 25 pre-publication review copies and you do not have access to a photocopier, it may be more cost-effective to make bound galleys. This is because galley printers typically charge less per page than your local copy shop.

The majority of reviewers are content to read books in manuscript form, but it is worthwhile to get them bound in some way – a visit to your local Kinko’s® should do the trick. A small amount of reviewers do object to bound manuscripts, since they are usually more bulky than galleys.

Make sure the galley or bound manuscript includes this information
either on the cover or first page:

* title
* author
* publication date
* ISBN
* number of pages
* price
* trim size
* hardcover or softcover
* number of illustrations and/or photographs
* publisher name and contact information
* distributor name and contact information
* publicist name, address and contact information
* print something like this on the cover: “Uncorrected proof. Galley copy only. Do not quote without prior permission from the publisher.”

Electronic galleys (egalleys) are the next stride in the evolution of the printed galley. Egalleys can have the same contents of printed galleys – they are just in ebook format. Egalleys are faster, easier, and cost much less to produce than printed galleys.

Egalley invitations can be emailed to everyone you'd send a bound galley: reviewers, catalogs, libraries, journalists, resellers, Websites, bookstore purchaseers, and other agents of influence.

My suggestion: Use a combination of both printed and electronic galleys. Send bound galleys to the most significant reviewers while using egalleys to expand your marketing reach to independent bookstores, smaller publications, and international markets. If possible, send the reviewer/purchaseer the version they prefer.

Titles (and Subtitles) Sell Books!

by: Joni Hamilton
Does a title really sell a book? The short answer is, yes. If a book does not attract a reader initially, it will be overlooked and not purchased. The book title is the element that creates the initial attraction to the book. Watch people who are browsing in a bookstore. A catchy title grabs their interest and makes them reach for the book out of curiosity. A great title makes browsers think, “Really?” or “What does THAT mean?” or “That’s what I need”. Think long and hard when choosing your book’s title. The title must give some clues about the book’s contents in a snappy “one-liner”.

Many authors struggle fiercely with the title choice, not realizing that the title is there somewhere in the book’s contents. They just haven’t recognized it because they are too close to the project. Sometimes it helps to talk to impartial, unbiased persons. Tell them what your book is about, and then listen to their feedback.
Alternately, on the tongue-in-cheek advice of one publishing professional, open a bottle of wine and start writing. Make a list of everything that comes to mind about what you have written in your book. Nothing is too silly, but do try to strike on the central theme or message.
When your list is complete (and the wine is all gone), group your notes into categories. Choose the snappiest, most intriguing words that say something about your book without sounding like a boring explanation.
Perhaps these titles will help you:

  • Woman-Sense Rules!
  • Fit to Cook
  • Climb Your Stairway to Heaven
  • Light the Fire
  • Spell Success in Your Life
If you are planning on a series, your title should be your “brand”. Then as you make your brand into a household word, you ensure future sales. As each title in the series is published, you know that people will purchase the latest book to complete the series. Think Harry Potter or Nancy Drew.
The subtitle of your book is a great way to increase sales. The subtitle gets to the heart of the book and convinces the reader of the book’s benefits. It lets people know that the book is unique and that they really can’t live without it. It makes the reader believe that he or she just can’t live without it – and that is your objective.
Check the following subtitles:

  • Woman-Sense Rules! – The Spiritual Woman’s Guide to Finding Yourself When You Didn’t Know You Were Missing
  • Fit to Cook – Why “Waist” Time in the Kitchen?
  • Climb Your Stairway to Heaven – the 9 habits of maximum happiness
  • Light the Fire – Fiery Food with a Light New Attitude!
  • Spell Success in Your Life - A road map for achieving your goals and surviving success
In the title and in the subtitle, you can use humor or emotions to sell your book, but avoid clichés and “corny” expressions, or overly common sayings. They soon become stale and annoying. Keep your title unique, catchy and relevant.
Before making the final decision on your title, conduct a title search (see our home study course, Idea to Book…to Success – the fast, easy, simple way! for instructions on title searches). Although you cannot copyright a title, duplicating titles only leads to confusion, and you want people to purchase your book, not a competitor’s book. Make your title one that increases the likelihood of increasing your book sales.

Free E-Book Marketing: Destroying The Myths

by: Chayden A. Bates
Before you read this, understand right now: Free E-Book
Marketing WORKS! It has been proven to be one of the
*most powerful* forms of online marketing ever offered. But
with the knowledge of its existence, and nothing but a
notion of the idea, many who have attempted to utilize its
power have failed. Why? The lack of understanding! Free E-Book Marketing has been in use for over SIX YEARS.
Successfully utilized by many "high-class" marketers. These
few have been actively creating and promoting Free
E-Books since the ability was provided.

Then, about the three-fourths of the way through 1999,
the news broke of this powerful "new" marketing form and
everyone and their brother were trying to "cash-in" on the
opportunities they were hearing about.

purchaseing up the e-publishing software stock, many
misunderstanding marketers began creating and compiling
everything they could get their hands on.

Throwing these so called worth while Free E-Books into the
world of the Web, they were actually doing more harm than
good. Little did ( or do ) they realize the necessary steps
that need to be taken in order to ensure their success ...
that of quality, unique and beneficial content.

Let me ask you, "How many Free E-Books have you
downloaded due to its sizzling title, only to find nothing but
an over used report with a million and one banner ads
flashing in your face?"

Too many to count?

There in lies the problem. How many "bad" Free E-Books
does it take before you stop downloading Free E-Books all
together? Do you know what that does, not only for the
author of the Free E-Book, but other, successful Free
E-Book Marketers?

Too say the least, its not good.

So what DOES make a good Free E-Book? What makes a
Free E-Book successful in the sense that it does what it is
meant to do? It's rather simple, and if you're at all
interested in this "old" form of marketing, than here are the
TWO MOST IMPORTANT aspects you need to realize:

ONE:

Your E-Book must be focused. It should only present a
single offer to its readers. It should not stray or attempt to
teach everything about anything. It should be centered
around one solid idea: To present your ( business )
knowledge as to establish yourself as an expert in your
field. To show and help the reader realize that you are a
credible source of information.

After reading your Free E-Book, your reader should have a
firm grasp of the concepts you present. They should be
able to follow through and succeed with the resources you
provide. This will help the passing of your Free E-Book as
well as strengthen your chances for future dealings with its
readers. ( This is what makes you money, not the banner
ads. )

TWO:

Your E-Book must be educational. If you decide to utilize
Free E-Book Marketing, than understand this: Your Free
E-Book is to be created to generate leads. How do you
generate leads? You educate your prospects about what
you have to offer. You show them the hows, whats and
whys of how your offer works and will work to benefit them
to act upon.

You must teach the reader all that you successfully can
about what the contents of your Free E-Book will do for
them. Before they will hand you their money to enhance
their lives, they need to know WHY what you're offering will
work for them.

By demonstrating, thus educating through the use of your
Free E-Book, your reader will naturally gravitate towards
you for "further" information, where in you may charge for
admission, thus making you your profits.

Free E-Book Marketing is simply a matter of understanding
how the marketing and psychological strategies of it work.
Understanding the above is *by far* the most important
aspects of Free E-Book Marketing you need to realize.

If what I have just shown you is not followed, you will only
work to hurt yourself. People want quality, informative
content ... and you want their money. By giving them what
they want, then suggesting they come to you for more,
you will work to help each other.

Free E-Book Marketing WORKS! But ONLY if you use it right.

by: Lea Toland
As a literary publicist I often am asked about publicity tips, tricks, and the magic behind my work. It's not magic. All you need to know are the basics and from there you will be able to create an effective book promotion. Below I've listed the most vital and basic tips to a successful book publicity campaign. 1. ALWAYS Take 'No' for an answer It can be frustrating when the media isn't interested in your book or story idea, but always thank them for their time and move on. If you try and persuade or argue with them you will leave a bad impression of yourself and your chances of working with this particular media in the future are slim. Try back in a couple months if it's a show or publication that you're particularly interested. The media changes with the seasons, and trends, so they may love your show or feature idea then, rather then now.

2. Don't Hound Your Publicist The more time you take up with your book publicist the less time they have to talk with the media. When you first begin your book publicity campaign ask your book publicist when an appropriate time would be to have a weekly chat, and see if they have a number to call in case of a publicity emergency. This will be well received by your book publicist and their efforts will be more successful!

3. Start NOW A book publicity campaign is the most successful within the first 6 months from your book's publication date (differs for traditionally published authors). This is because the media wants the latest products and they want to be the first to tell their audience about them. It's best to start publicizing your story to mainstream and industry media prior to your book's release and reach out to consumers once your book is available to order.

4. Don't Pitch Your Book Make sure that you're pitching a concept, show idea, or solution when you begin promoting your book. If you sound more like…. "Hello, I am an author who just published my women's interest novel....." rather then, "Hello, is this a good time for you? Great. I'm a relationship expert who has proven that love novels bring couples closer in bed…" The second pitch is more intriguing and will most likely get a few minutes from the person on the receiving end. Your goal with every pitch should be to get their attention, a few minutes of their time and booked or featured as a guest, depending on the type of media.

5. Create a Press Kit Before you begin promoting your book you should have a press kit ready to go. The essentials in most literary kits are a cover letter, press release, author bio, Q&A page, sample interview questions, and articles that make your topic relevant today. You're publisher should supply you with these materials and if you're self-published you'll most likely need to create these materials from scratch and on your own. This can be a daunting task to some, but the internet or library can be helpful when researching the proper formats of these products. Or, find a publicist to create a press kit for you!

6. Know Your Target Audience Who will purchase your book? 'Everybody' is not the correct answer to this question, although it is a common answer. The more focused you can get with your efforts the better your results will be. If your book is more main stream rather then specialized, then try beginning with a smaller audience and broadening your focus after you've saturated this first audience. Just a tip: Authors should always start with their local media, then regional (surrounding areas and states), and finally saturate national media.

7. Have fun! Your enthusiasm, humor, and smile should shine through in every phone pitch, letter, and e-mail. If you're not excited about getting your work out there, then why should a producer or editor be excited to give you time on their program or space in their publication.

I truly believe that any author can publicize their own book if they have the drive, energy, and time to see it through from beginning to end. Publicity is the most vital within the first six months from its publication date, so authors should hit the ground running. If you need more guidance or would rather hire a professional to handle your book's publicity then start looking now. There are many publicity companies out there, but you need to find the one that's right for you and that is as excited about your book as you are.

Your Book and a Great Website

by: Dr. Jamie Fettig
One of the most overlooked and easiest ways to get your book into the hands of the people you wrote it for, is having a great website.
Build a great Website. I can't state this often enough or strongly enough: you must have an attractive, easy to use Website that lets your visitors do four things:

  1. purchase your book.
  2. Register and download sample chapters or get your e-newsletter.
  3. E-mail friends about your book.
  4. Find out more about you.
Your Website should be ground zero for your book business, the place where everyone comes to purchase copies, give you their contact information, communicate with you about media interviews or bulk orders, and just learn about your book and why they should purchase it. It's the single most important aspect of your marketing plan.
Notice that I said, "great" Website. There are thousands of new books coming out every month, and many of them are amateurish at best. Having a sloppy, clunky, poorly written Website only makes your book look like one of those amateur-hour productions. Invest the money in a professional Web developer, someone who can design a classy, beautiful site, build your e-commerce system and give you the means to easily update your site's content at any time.
Good sites all make the books and their authors appear professional, legitimate, and smart. They're inviting information centers for people to come to and spend time getting to know both book and writer.
You should have your Website up and running before you begin any PR or sales activities, probably at least two months before your book hits the streets. Talk to several Web designers or get a referral from someone you trust. In any case, make sure your site has at least these features:
  • E-commerce so people can purchase your book. (a great place –- http://www.bazuji.com/shopping)
  • A registration page that asks visitors to give you their contact information before they can download a sample chapter or get your e-newsletter.
  • A media section where members of the press can download your press kit as a PDF, read other media coverage, and contact you for interviews.
  • A contact page with all your contact information.
  • A bio page with your personal story.
  • A function that allows visitors to e-mail their friends from your site.
Sample your book in print and on the Internet.
If you have a Web site (and you should), it's simple. Just take a chapter from your book, paste it into its own file with the proper copyright information so it's a self-contained document, turn it into a PDF (Portable Document Format, a wonderful type of file created by Adobe), and place it on your Website for free downloading. Then send an e-mail to your entire list offering them an excerpt from your upcoming book free. A 10% or 20% response rate is not out of the question.
For print publications, it goes like this:
  1. Pull together a list of target newspapers and magazines.
  2. Contact the editors by e-mail asking if they would be interested in running your excerpt at no cost (editors love content they can get for free).
  3. Send your chapter as a Word file to those who agree. Make sure it's completely clean and free of any typos or grammatical errors, and include an author bio at the end that lists your Web address.
  4. Be sure to get reprints or a PDF of the printed article you can use for publicity purposes.
Start sending e-mails to editors several months before your book comes out. It usually takes a while to hear back, and even longer to actually get your sample in print.

The Most Effective E-book Marketing Tool On the Internet

by: Wayne Perkins
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"The Autoresponder"
"The Most Effective E-book Marketing Tool on the Internet"
by Wayne Perkins, "The E-book Marketing King
-----------------------------------------------------------------
About six years ago the Internet fascinated me. Someone told me that I could place a billboard on the World Wide Web and forty million people would go by and see it every day.
I was completely entranced with the idea that my information could be delivered anywhere in the world in less than a minute!

Immediately dialed the telephone number shown on a vacant billboard on the freeway and asked how much it would cost to put my face on that billboard. The reply was "ten thousand dollars a month."
I decided that the Internet was a cheaper option and set out to place my banner in view of 40 million people. Boy, was I in for a surprise. In over three months of exposure on the "net" I received only a hand full of hits. The only e-mail I received was from other people like me who had shelled out lots of money, only to find that no one was viewing my home page.
I paid a price but learned a valuable lesson. "The potential of the Internet in book selling is fantastic, but you have to learn the tools of Internet marketing or you will never make any money regardless of the product or service you offer."
Fortunately, the same tool that so entranced me six years ago is the same tool that I find to be the most effective in selling over the web.
That tool is called an "autoresponder."
An autoresponder is an e-mail service that works something like a fax-on-demand. For an author or a publisher, it works like this. You create an article or sample chapter of your book. You load that chapter into your autoresponder or e-mail on demand. You publicize the e-mail address of your autoresponder in your e-mail signature file, your web site, your business cards, order forms, and in any printed advertising about your books.
The potential purchaseer sees that he/she may sample a chapter of your book. He types in your autoresponder e-mail address or clicks on it if he is on-line. As soon as the e-mail is sent three things happen.
1. The document is found stored on a web server and delivered immediately to the potential purchaseer. The process takes less than one minute and is operational 24 hours a day. The purchaseer may read your article or chapter in e-mail or print it out and read it offline. He/she may forward the article to other people.
2. You (the author or publisher) get a receipt e-mail that gives you the name, e-mail address of the potential purchaseer and any comments that he/she may have wanted you to see.
3. You collect a valuable e-mail address of a potential purchaser of your books and other products.
How effective is this tool? I receive a book sale from approximately one out of every four requests. To compare that with web page hits, I only receive one or two sales for every 3000 web hits each day!
Why is its so effective?
I think autoresponders give the potential purchaseer time to read and absorb what you have published. Most visitors on the Web are looking for free information. They are not looking to purchase anything. If they have a chance to download a sample chapter, print it out and read it while they are away from their computer, they don't feel pressured to purchase. A reader is making a more informed and objective purchaseing decision.
If you already have a web site, ask your webmaster for autoresponders. They should be free of charge. You should be able to add, edit or delete text any time you choose.
If your webmaster's eyes glaze over when you ask about autoresponders, then you have some free options. I recommend these options to authors and publishers that have no web site as well. All you need is an e-mail address to take advantage of the Web's most effective marketing tool for authors and booksellers.
Try a couple of my autoresponders and check out how easy they are to use.

Online Promotion Beats Traditional Seven-One (Part 1)

by: Judy Cullins
While traditional marketing can work for the book author or publisher, the return is dim for the huge effort it takes. You must promote 90% of the time to even get a milligram of attention. While you may have a success or two, most of your efforts will bring poor book sales. Ask yourself right now, what is working for me? What is not? Traditional Book Marketing Method One: The Press Release
Sure, press releases can bring you attention, but it takes a lot of time to gather specific media or radio/TV producers' names. When I wrote "The San Diego Media Resource Directory" that took 50 hours to research, I had to also keep the media list up- to-date, ask editors and radio producers by phone how they wanted their releases. Some prefer fax, others email or snail mail.
You waste your efforts if your release doesn't go the right person. Many authors make the mistake of sending the release to the book editor. He gets hundreds each month, and will pay no attention if you are self-published. Like agents and traditional publishers, only 1-2% are chosen.
Another problem is the sheer numbers of releases you send out. Don't relax after you send one or two releases. Think in terms of at least five a month. Ninety-five percent releases are ignored and tossed into the round file. Why? For many reasons, but check to see if you include a compelling heading, a human- interest story, a list of how-tos, or a present-time news analogy.Ask yourself, " Is it under one page, double-spaced? Did I construct. organize and freely give the solutions that my book or service offer for my readers' problems?
Your news release should not be about your book, but give actual solutions the media readers and radio audiences can use. My first published press release responded to an article on the editorial page about the "Three R's." My headline was "School Need to Teach the Fourth "Rapid Reading. After discussing the background problems of reading circles, I included the benefits of rapid reading, and gave nine how-to solutions. The publisher not only loved the article, but also came personally to my home to take my picture. I used the piece for marketing to corporations.
Most people don't realize the purpose of the press release is to attract the editor by the collar, so he or she will want to do a feature story on you. Make your headlines sizzle. "Seven Ways to Sell More Books Than You Ever Dreamed Of" got a feature story which attracted 90 people to a seminar by the same name. The coach sold $550 worth of books, gained four new book- coaching clients worth $2000, enrolled 15 in her weekly seminars, yielding 24 clients published within a two-year period.
Traditional Book Marketing Method Two: Giving Talks, Seminars and Presenting at Expos
Creating a talk takes a lot of time. You must practice it at least two times before you deliver it. You must discover resources to find organizations to present to. Many of them don't pay their speakers. You may say that's OK because I will sell books. Yes, you'll sell a dozen or maybe more, but think of the huge effort it took to get there. Consider travel time, traffic, clothing upkeep, and schlepping all those heavy books around.
Like myself, you may present a talk or seminar to a corporation with big hopes of selling your products. When they pay you, though, they may set boundaries on book sales. One positive is that because you have a book, you can negotiate and leverage with meeting planners and top executives for higher paid presentations.
The biggest disadvantage? You must wait for decision makers to accept and schedule you--that could be six months or more. Think of the time invested in marketing materials such as the One-Page, videos, and meetings. I left this venue because the time from presentation to fruition took several in-house meetings before a decision could be made.. I knew there was a better way! But was it expos?
Speaking at Expos or maintaining a booth takes many hours of work. Consider preparing and submitting press releases, creating brochures, hand outs, decorating the booth, presenting a drawing, and bringing in products to sell.
Speaking can bring you a few book sales, but people passing by your booth are usually just looking. Even when I gave free mini seminars every 2 hours, and passed out free tickets ahead of time, not many bought books. Giving out hundreds of flyers with free seminar offers brought few results too.
Yes, I did get on a talk-radio show and eleven people showed up at my Supermemory seminar. No, they didn't purchase books or book a coaching session. Yes, I collected names and email addresses from a free drawing. I was able to use them for my free eNewsletter, The Book Coach Says...," but clients did not bang down my door to use my talents.
I figure my prep and floor time was 44 hours for just one expo. With sales under $350, I'd say that was slave labor.
Think of Your Promotion Time and Budget
Most one or two-book authors don't have a large marketing budget. Marketing their speaking leaves them little time to write and promote their books. Marketing experts say do five things a day, six days a week, which sounds pretty doable. But do they bring results?
Aren't sales what we should count? Before the sales roll in however, you need to create a foundation--"a plan"--of what you want to promote, what money you want to make from it monthly, how much time you are willing to give it, and how you will get the word out to your target audience. This takes a little time, but is worth it.
If other marketing and promotion campaigns have brought few book sales, have left your wallet thinner, wasted your valuable time, or left you with a garage full of unsold masterpieces, you may now be ready to set up your book's virtual marketing machine--the Internet.

Protect Your E-book Files From Theft

by: Wayne Perkins
Hi,
I am the author of the following article. Please feel free to publish it on your website, in your e-zines or newsletters. Feel free in include it in any of your print publications as well. All I ask is that you include the 4 line author resource box at the bottom of the page
Thank you,
Wayne Perkins "The E-book Marketing King"

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Title: Protecting Your E-books Files
Perkins Failsafe System for Protecting Your Fame and Fortune ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three years ago I was giving my first E-book keynote speech before the Arizona Book Publishing Association, when one of the esteemed publisher members asked me a very pointed question.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---The Perkins E-book Fame and Fortune Encryption System---Version 4.1 PEFAFES
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Components of the Perkins E-book fame and fortune encryption system: PEFAFES
Sylvia Wiss brought you $99,503.95 in a time frame of one hour Your total sales for the day: $139,013.90 The total time that expired during this process is just two hours
Good luck.

Large or Small Businesses Profit Through Ad Tracking

What do Sprint and Net Marketing Results have in common?

Hum...one is a Fortune 500 company the other is a small
company (under $100 million). One is in the telecommunications
business the other is in the information and services business.
There might be some overlap there...but not the answer I was
looking for. Give-up?

There is something that we both do unfailingly and with a
passion...

We both Track and Test ALL of our advertising. Both online
and traditional media, creative, response rates, clickthrough
rates, conversion rates, ROI, campaign costs, sales, etc. For
some of you this is no surprise, for others it may be a shock.

Why?

1) It is the ONLY WAY you will maximize your profits!
2) It is the ONLY WAY you will maximize your profits!
3) Put another way, if you don't you will just LOSE MONEY!

Worst yet its like throwing money into a swirling wind and
then trying to find it. Some went north, some went south, but
you don't know how much or which direction you should go get
get the most back. You just run in circles.

Everyday I find out new approaches regarding what works and
what doesn't, how to make advertising better and what makes
it worse. Tracking Ads and applying the insights makes
and saves me $1,000's every single month.

For example, I have never been a big fan of FFA and Classified
Postings. But I decided to give World Submitter a try (posting
by hand would be too time consuming) to automate the postings
to the FFA, Classifieds and Search sites.

Well to my amazement I get between 1,500 and 1,700 visitors
a month, 110 - 150 newsletter subscribers and 1 - 4 orders.
What does this mean? Well, depending on the product I will
make between $9 to $99 per order, subscribers would cost
about $0.15 each through a registration service and the
visitors would be about $0.005 per clickthrough.

So for $19.95/month I get:

Min Max
Sales..........$9.00 $496.00
Visitors.......$7.50 $ 8.50
Subscribers...$16.50 $ 22.50
-------- ---------
Total.........$33.00 $527.00

*-----------------HOT TIP------------------*
You can use the Free Version of World Submitter to see how
it works for you.
Go to http://www.netmarketingresults.com/ws/
Remember to track your ads!
*-----------------HOT TIP------------------*

I have a front-end profit of between $10.05 and $506.95 per
month with just this one technique and more will come on the
backend. If I didn't track the ads, I would have never known
that this would be a profitable strategy. And this is just one
method!

Ad Tracking enable you to test your sales and ad copy, banners
or almost anything that you are expecting a response. Then
improve it to gain greater results.

You can also integrate adtracking with direct mail. When you
print your direct mail piece use your adtracking URL to direct
your prospects to your website and you will automatically track
their response.

Here are a few places that you can use Ad Tracking:

* Article Submissions
* Search Engines
* Email newsletters
* Opt-in email ads
* Pay-per-click ads
* Classifieds
* Bulletin boards
* Email signature files
* Message boards
* Reseller programs
* Autoresponders
* FFA links pages,
* Newsgroup postings
* Pop-up advertising
* Network marketing,
* Joint ventures
* Reciprocal links
* eBook marketing,
* Banner ads
* Affiliate programs, Press releases,
* Giveaway contests
* Shareware downloads
* Viral marketing
* Direct mail

As you can see, there are many opportunities whether you are
large or small to improve your profits through tracking. Don't
wait to put more money in your pocket!

What You MUST Know BEFORE Publishing Your First Ebook

by: John A. Karnish
".exe or .pdf, that is the question..."

Today I'm going to explain the different types of ebooks you
can create, the benefits and weaknesses of each type and
help you decide which is best for you. There are basically two types of ebooks you can create, .exe
an "executable file," or .pdf a "portable document file.
Don't get confused by the technical mumbo jumbo. All you
need is to know the two names and the benefits and
disadvantages of each.

Of the two formats, my favorite is ".exe ." The biggest
drawback is that "Macintosh" owners can't read ebooks in
this format.

If you're going to be selling your information, you never
want to lose potential customers. However, in my opinion
this is the only big fault.

The biggest benefits are that there are many cheap and easy
to use programs that will create ebooks in this format.
Some have some very cool features and if you at least know
how to create a webpage you can easily create an impressive
looking ebook.

Ebooks created with .exe software are usually the same
quality as any page on the internet. They are very similar
to viewing a webpage in a browser. Most have back, forward
and home buttons which makes it very similar to your
readers' browser.

The biggest benefit of .pdf files is that your work will be
able to be read on most computers, PC and Macintosh. This is
why when top internet marketers publish an ebook, they
almost always use this format.

I will always make a .pdf version of anything I plan on
selling since it just makes financial sense. However, it's
not my favorite format to use because of the following
reasons.

First of all, there is basically only one program that
creates .pdf files and about 4X the price of .exe software.
Your readers also need a special (reader) software to read
view your documents. The software is free and usually
installed on most new computers, but it's a hassle to make
your customers download extra software just to read your
ebook. I also find .pdf files to be a little hard on the
eyes and out of focus.

The main software for creating .pdf files is Adobe Acrobat.
While you can create an ebook with the same features, I find
it to be a little harder to figure out. I admit that I am
not very good when it comes to the techie. So if you have
more technical computer experience than I do you might enjoy
Acrobat more.

The plus side is that Adobe Acrobat actually has more
features than most .exe publsihing software. If you're
willing to devote the time and study the software it can do
some amazing things like leaving hidden notes for your
readers.

Besides creating an ebook in .exe or .pdf format, you can
always just create a collection of.html pages and place them
all in a folder to be downloaded. Create an index page and
link your other pages to it. This will allow just about
every computer user to access you publication and you don't
even need any software.

Well, you might be wondering which software is right for
you? I would recommend investing the money in Adobe Acrobat.
It creates the one format that almost all computer users can
read. However it is very pricey, especially for
entrepreneurs on a tight budgets.

There is some very good .exe software that is much cheaper
and is a very good option for those with limited incomes.

No matter which you choose, I would create a publication
that Mac users could read. Create a version in .pdf and
.exe format so Mac owners can read your work and PC users
can choose their preferred format.

If you can't create a .pdf version at least offer the
ability to download the work on a collection of webpages.
You might want to offer it at a discounted price so they
don't feel cheated. Also be sure to put a copyright symbol
at the bottom of your pages to scare off plagiarizers.

If you search some JavaScript sites, you probably can find a
script that will prevent other people from viewing your
source code or copying your webpage text. This might be
helpful in combating plagiarism if you plan on offering a
folder full of plain .html files for download.

How To Use Viral Marketing Tools To Explode Your Ezine
Subscriber List!

By Bret Forster / ProfitAvenue.com

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>><<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I’m sure that most online marketers agree that successful
online businesses revolve around a large list of hungry
subscribers. In today’s Internet business environment, if
you aren’t reminding people you still exist your business
will stagnate and die!So how do you let both potential and current subscribers know
that you still exist? I believe that Viral Marketing
Techniques and Tools are the key to your future dreams of a
profit filled future.

The correct use of Viral Marketing has lead to huge online
businesses! Everyone has heard of the Hotmail example. That
one little snippet, “Get your free email at Hotmail.com.”, on
every outbound email lead to 12 million subscribers in 1.5
years! What’s even more amazing is that Hotmail reportedly
spent less than $500,000 on marketing and promotion!

Ok, I know what you’re thinking. How is this going to help
me? Don’t worry, I’ll explain in the rest of this
informative article. :o)

I believe your entire online marketing success depends on your
ability to gain new ezine subscribers to your own opt-in only
ezine or newsletter list.

A Huge list of ezine subscribers = A Huge explosion of online
business profits!

This is the basic formula for ezine subscriber list success.

The easiest way to grow your ezine subscriber list is by using
viral marketing tools.

In other words, if you give away free eBooks and e-Reports,
they should be Viral in nature.

Here's a basic viral example:

Let's suppose that you have an opt-in ezine list related to
eBook Marketing. Your subscribers are most likely looking for
eBook writing and marketing tips.

You could offer them a free eBook on “How to Submit Your eBook
to the Best eBook Directories on the Internet!” On each page
of the eBook, add a highly visible website link to your
ezine’s subscribe webpage. Here's an example ad and link I’ve
used for my ProfitAvenue.com Profits Explosion Ezine:

Everything You Need To Develop A Full-time Income Online!
Plus, subscribe today and you’ll receive Over 20 up-to-date
eBooks on Internet and eBook Marketing!

Subscribe today at: http://www.profitavenue.com/subscribe.htm

Then offer your eBook to your existing ezine subscribers first.
(I always give my subscribers first dibs on everything I
create or offer) :o) Also, let everyone know that they can
give away your eBook to their website visitors, friends,
family, and their own ezine subscriber list!

After a couple weeks of downloads, your eBook will start to
deliver quality, targeted subscribers to your ezine and
website.

And here's a viral example on steriods:

While creating your eBook, add affiliate links to your
affiliate program’s products or other affiliate program’s
products. This creates an additional incentive for people
to pass the eBook around because now they can make money.
Internet Marketing expert, Jimmy D. Brown, has created a huge
successful online business with the brandible eBooks he
offers!

In this example, you have your ezine subscription webpage
links on every page and eBook readers have an additional
monetary incentive to offer your eBook to others! That’s
Viral Marketing in it’s truest form!

Book Marketing 101 for Self Published Authors

by: Ray Robinson - Dog Ear Publishing
Self Publishing Book Marketing 101 No matter what any POD publisher or marketing company tells you (even the traditional publishing houses) you, the author, are almost 100% the reason your book will sell.
It is your belief, excitement, enthusiasm, and energy that will get a reader excited about purchaseing your book.

Publishers are certainly a vehicle by which you can communicate your passion to the rest of the world, but, for ANYTHING to happen you'll need to know a few things about yourself and your book - and be able to communicate them very clearly.
1 - What is your definition of success for your book?
Some authors write for themselves and their families only – they don’t dream of their books as bestsellers in the marketplace. Some authors write for a very specific personal need to tell their story. Some have unique insight into very specific topics. Many have dreams of seeing their book in the front of Borders or Barnes & Noble. Each author is different, but you MUST decide what your real definition of success happens to be. Don’t try to pursue a goal that may not be what you actually feel is important.
2 - Who will purchase your book?
This is the big secret to sales success in self publishing. Target your marketing to your potential reader – and have it be someone who is reachable.
“Everyone will want to read my book!” Sorry, but that doesn’t work. Even the absolute best selling books – that sell 2 or 3 million copies in a year - only penetrate to a very small percent of the population. Sales success for your book will be driven by defining a very clear picture  of who is interested in what you have to say.
And - they must be identifiable: Make a list! Which groups would be interested in your book? Why? Who is next? Why should the need or want your book? (remember this – someone is more likely to purchase something they NEED before something they WANT)
Now – narrow it down even more. Years ago books on computers were all the rage – the market was saturated at the “beginner” level, and it seemed impossible to get anymore books into consumers hands. Then a company came along with the bright idea that they would write a computer book for beginners – but beginners who felt intimidated by their computers – and the now ubiquitous and quite famous “For Dummies” series was born – at the time the books hit, there were nearly 3 dozen titles out for beginners. Yet this one scooped up nearly a 70% market share overnight. The rest were left to fight for the scraps. Find a unique angle about your book – and don’t try and be everything to everyone, because you can’t – instead target 100% of a specific part!
3 - Where will you sell your book?
Start Worldwide (world wide web that is) and then get local: Where are your customers? Probably scattered around the country. Use the power of print on demand and just in time fulfillment to deliver books all across the nation without having to print hundreds at a time. Where does your customer hang out online? What magazines and papers do they read? What stores do they frequent – that AREN’T bookstores? What associations, clubs, or affiliations do they join? What conventions to they go to? How can you reach them? Promote your books where you find your potential purchaseers.
4 - How will you promote your book?
The least expensive and most effective ways to promote books are with book reviews, news releases, search engine registration, and some form of highly targeted direct advertising – such as email campaigns, news releases, and pay-for-performance click through advertising. Longer term promotions include author signings, TV and Radio spots, and tradeshows – these are also the most difficult, time consuming, and expensive to secure.
Do NOT neglect the power of you the author – many publishers promotional packages include materials that can help turn you into a promotional machine. Business cards, posters, bookmarks – all are available to support your marketing efforts.
Follow these steps on creating a plan for your book, and you'll find it much easier to create an effective and efficient marketing program for your book.

Get Rid of Those Doorway Pages

by: windsong
Getting traffic to your site is the ultimate goal. Without
the traffic, you site isn't going to do much but take up
cyberspace. Now, there are many ways to do this, and you
should be doing them all. But for our purpose here, I will
limit it to Search Engines.A while back, doorway pages were all the rage. Everyone was
scrambling to create hundreds and thousands of pages to
essentially trick the search engines into leading people to
their sites. It seemed unethical to me, and I figured that
the engines would pick up on this and bring it to an abrupt
halt. And they have. They want pages with content. So much
for all those doorway pages. It was a big waste of time and
effort.

Most web sites consist of several pages. Hopefully, each
page covers a specific, but related topic. And, hopefully,
there is already a navigational system in place, where
each page links to all other pages. This is a must.

If you have a site, for example, on Internet Marketing,
you already know that this subject encompasses many topics.
Each of those topics deserves its own page. You might have
pages on Ebook Marketing, Promotion, Ezines, Search
Engines, etc.

Each page in your site is already a 'doorway.' If you
optimize each of these pages as if it were a doorway page,
you will get a good ranking in the Search Engines. First,
make sure that each page sticks to a particular topic.
Then write your meta tags accordingly.

Here are some guidelines for top placement in the Search
Engines:

* Try to limit your meta keywords (preferably phrases)
to 3. The worst thing you can do is have a gazillion
keywords. Your relevancy will be shot to heck and you
might get listed, but you will be #3,583,204. No one
will find you.

* Do not use the same keywords on every page. Each page
is different, so make the keywords different.

* Make sure your keywords appear in the title tag, the
description tag, and all over your page, especially
near the top.

* Do not list keywords that do not appear on the page.
Again, Do NOT list keywords that do not appear on the
page. Lists have been circulated showing the "most
searched for keywords". They generally consist of words
like: sex, naked, women, gay, adult, erotica etc....
Don't even go there. Do you really want people going to
your site that don't give a hoot about what you have to
say??? They are not interested and will not purchase anything.
You are wasting your time as well as theirs.

* Use keywords in comment tags, alt tags, and in header
tags. You can also use a clear 1x1 pixel image and load
the alt tag with keywords.

* The very first thing that appears on your page should
be a statement of benefits rich in keywords, similar to
your description meta tag. Some Search Engines ignore
your meta tags and print the first words on your page
as the description in their listing. If your navigational
bar is at the top of the page, that is what will show up
in their description. Not good.

* Header tags, (H1 for example) are very important. Search
Engines read the header tags. Use these for paragraph
headings instead of font tags, and load up the Keywords.

* Forget the bouncing flash and glitz. Yeah, they are fun
to play with, but the Search Engines are not impressed.
They may even be hampered by this as far as indexing
your page. Frames, flash movies, CGI scripts, javascript,
applets and image maps are all complete junk to a search
engine spider. Not only that, this sort of thing will
actually push your real content further from the top of
the page, reducing the relevancy of what the spiders
actually do see.

* Keep the spiders happy. Feed them lots of relevant
content. This bears repeating, but I won't. :)

* Get a Domain! A top 10 listing is virtually impossible
to achieve without having your own registered domain
name.

There is no secret magical formula for getting a top ranking
in the Search Engines. Currently there are over 5,000 places
to register a web site with the number increasing daily. In
reality, about 10 of these search engines will produce 90%
of your search engine traffic. The larger search engines like
Excite, Lycos and Alta Vista are visited millions of time a
week and offer the most comprehensive types of searches for
Internet surfers.
