Playing Chess in Russia – The Agony of Victory

Sunday, July 14, 2013

by: Rick Chapo
Russians have a thing for chess and, frankly, are very good at it. Being from San Diego, I thought chess was something you put photo albums in.
Playing Chess
Playing chess requires thinking ten or twelve steps ahead. If I wanted to understand the Russian mind, I had to learn to play chess. If nothing else, it would be a good way to pass the time. This I was told by Robert, an American living in the same town as me.
I wasn’t particularly excited about learning, but gave in one day after growing tired of staring out the window. I had seen the movie, “Searching for Bobby Fisher”. What more could I possibly need? How hard could it be?

After beginning the game, Robert took pity on me after I apparently made some moves that were questionable. He explained why he was making particular moves and the resulting implications for my king. The game proceeded slowly while he explained strategies to his inattentive student. Then the magic moment occurred.
I imagine every teacher suffers from the occasional embarrassment of being outdone by a student. I like to call it beginner’s luck and invoke the empirical evidence at horse racing tracks and Las Vegas casinos. If you’re a first timer, you will always win. It doesn’t matter if you’re betting on a horse because of the color scheme or hitting on black jack while already holding 19 in your hand. It just happens.
With our chess game, Robert had made a particular move and was in the process of explaining it. I sat staring at the board and thinking deep thoughts, which is to say I was wondering what was for dinner, etc. Just then, I noticed something on the board, moved my rook and declared, “Checkmate!”
Robert stared at the board. Then he started laughing. Then he wanted to play again. Being a good sport, I immediately announced my retirement as a chess player.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t leave my victory alone and gloated to a few people about it. Make no mistake, Robert would beat me a million times if we played a million games, but you have to live in the moment!
Within a few days, karma struck and I began to pay for my gloating. People would start showing up at my apartment with chessboards and, of course, vodka. The games were so laughably one-sided it was ridiculous. Typically, I would make two moves and then hear “Sah!” which I believe meant “check!” in Russian.
My humiliation occurred more or less every day for roughly a month. Some of the victorious would even come back for a second pounding. Finally, I had to take the dramatic step of refusing to answer the door.
In the end, I set the game of chess back a few hundred years and Robert had his vengeance.

Celebrating New Year's Eve in Spain

by: Susan Pedalino
Like most festivals in Spain, New Year´s Eve, known as Noche Vieja is usually a family affair which takes place at home. Until midnight people tend to stay at home and on the stroke of midnight it is traditional to eat 12 grapes, one on each stroke of the clock to bring good luck for the New Year. This tradition began when after a particularly big grape harvest the king of Spain decided to give everybody grapes to eat on New Year's Eve.

It is traditional to listen to the clock from Puerta del Sol in Madrid, usually via the television. Even young people won’t go out with their friends until they have seen the New Year in with their families. Throughout the country there are street parties and special nights in hotels and clubs everywhere. There is a growing trend towards celebrating the New Year in restaurants or clubs where the meal and all-night entertainment are provided. Take note that you would probably need to book in advance for this as they need to prepare for the numbers
Those who live in Madrid congregate in the main square (Puerta del Sol in Madrid) and eat the grapes along with a celebratory bottle of cava then head out into the night until after sunrise. Having said that, according to a Spanish friend in Madrid, this tends to be more popular with the tourists than the actual madrilenos!
For people visiting Spain with the intention of celebrating New Year, make sure that you either bring a crowd of friends and family with you or have some waiting here for you or it could feel quite uneventful. Don’t be surprised to walk through some towns on New Year’s Eve and discover that all the bars are closed as the staff are at home celebrating with their families.
Estepona:
If you head for the Plaza del Reloj at about eleven thirty, you will find that the council provide party hats, streamers, balloons etc, not to mention the twelve grapes to see the New Year in together in the square. I might add that this is all free, as is the impressive fireworks display that follows.
Benalmadena:
The Torrequebrada Casino is a popular place to celebrate the New Year but you would have to book pretty soon to avoid disappointment. At the Plaza Mezqita in Arroyo de la Miel, the town hall arranges entertainment with live bands etc. They have two celebrations, the Spanish and then at 1am they all sing and welcome in the New Year for the English.
Wherever you decide to spend New Year in Spain and whatever you decide to do, don’t forget to wear the customary red underwear which must be bought for you by someone else!

A Tropical Island Vacation With Great Nightlife

by: Aimee C. Barnard
Some people might look for complete solitude during a tropical island vacation to get away from it all, but no matter how blissful beach holidays can be, some long for great night life as well.
For those of you who wish to go to an island where there are also some exciting night life activities, check out this list of 5 of the world’s top tropical destinations where you can sunbathe by day and party by night.
Ibiza, Spain

This is The Place to go for the best night life and party scenes. From its bars, to its clubs, to its fun-loving people, Ibiza has long been the world’s best destination for parties and more parties.
So what do you do in Ibiza? First, remember that there’s always something new going on. So know first what’s hot for the day or the week you’re visiting and make sure you make the best of any event in town.
If you’d rather not do this research and prefer to be spontaneous, then just go to any of its many clubs and you’re practically guaranteed a great night out.
True to almost every night hangout in Spain, life doesn’t really start until the bell strikes 12! So make sure you get a siesta in because with everything that Ibiza offers, that’s about the only sleep you’ll get!
Phuket Thailand
The exotic splendors of Bangkok’s palaces may not grace Phuket, but if you want to be by the beach all day and party all night in Siam, then Phuket is a great place to be.
For those who really want to party, Patong is where the island’s bars, clubs and discotheques are. If you’ve got the kids with you, you might also want to visit Phuket Fantasea on Kamala Beach, which is the islands version of a festival and cultural event –a place to sample Thai theater, eat great Thai food, play games, and go shopping.
On the other hand, if you want to go some place a bit tamer, Karon Beach is an excellent place for restaurants with some good food and great cocktails . And if you want a classier and MUCH quieter ambiance, go to Bangtao bay.
Negril, Jamaica
Relieve the lifestyle of the 60’s as well as immerse yourself in exotic Jamaican culture when you go for a tropical island vacation in Negril.
Night activities in Negril are really laid-back island living but fun. There are usually no schedules, no fixed time, no fixed place. You literally just have to follow the music and that’s where the action is going to be for the night—a night of dancing, reggae appreciation, drinking and great conversations.
Sydney, Australia
If you want the feel of a big cosmopolitan city at night yet be lounging on the beach by day, we recommend a tropical island vacation in Sydney where you’ll never run out of things to do.
For a bit of the arts and a wonderful experience know what shows are on in the Sydney Opera House Theater. Or if you go there in the summer, the acclaimed Sydney Festival is one cultural event not to be missed.
For a bit of local lifestyle on the other hand, check out the bars and clubs that locals frequent. There are many tour companies that offer night tours for this purpose which you might want to take part in if you want to know Sydney’s secret night hideaways.
Nassau, Bahamas
This is a popular destination for night revelers and it’s very easy to see why---Nassau could easily be described as the Caribbean’s nightlife capital.
There are first of all, the casinos that thrill-seekers frequent. These casinos come with all the fun and excitement that even people who do not play will find very interesting.
Then there are the discotheques and clubs where you can experience the Bahamians love for life and fun on the dance floor. There are also cultural shows for those who want something a bit more sedate.
A tropical island vacation in Nassau will undoubtedly give you 24 hours of fun on your island holidays in the Caribbean

Tips For Football Betting

by: Rob Mellor
How depressingly gray would be a world where everything is governed by a set of universal rules rigorously shaping everything? Isn’t it better if we strike back with a chance to confound the tweed coated straight laced brigade and weave a little exotic odds into life that are not really approved of. It is precisely this change that inspires even the most sober of us to risk a couple of quid. But the art of a successful competition is to not only create a game that has a real chance of success for the entry stake, but allows us to lose that stake without significant damage to our ongoing lifestyle. Placing bets on football matches using various tips and tactics helps us achieve this motive.

In this article we shall thus discuss about the major tips and tactics that help us make the best of our money. Football betting is not like the other traditional casino games. Those games are games of chance where the house always has a built-in edge. Football betting is different in that you can choose which games to wager on and which games to pass on. By only betting on games that have a positive expected return and passing on games that have negative expected return, the football betting enthusiast can thus turn the tables on the sports book and put himself in the position to always have the edge.
Basic knowledge of sports handicapping is required
Football betting requires a basic knowledge of sports handicapping. You need to understand what goes into determining the spread and how to arrive at an educated guess at the game outcome. Football handicapping is part science and part art. The best football handicappers not only know how to analyze the statistics, they also have an instinct gained from years of experience. To acquire these skills and instincts the punter needs to do handicapping for him self using picks and recommendations from other bettors as simply a starting point.
Handicapping is all about acquiring and using the right information
Handicapping is all about acquiring and using the right information. You are attempting to predict the future. You do that by looking at what has happened in the past, which is where statistics are useful, and by looking at the current situation, which is where the latest news is critical.
However one should always remember that even the best handicappers are rarely right more than 58% of the time. Our goal should be to win more than 50% of the bets.

Famous for its French Quarter and notorious for its Mardi Gras celebration, New Orleans is a veritable carnival of sensory delights. From music to food to atmosphere, New Orleans has become a cultural staple of the United States. The historic French Quarter offers cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages, and hotels that redefine the word 'elegance.' A stay at the luxurious Astor Crowne Plaza, among others, ensures that your visit includes a healthy dose of refined pampering, and if you're going to make the most of this city, you're going to need your rest! It's hard to find better music than New Orleans jazz, and the city makes sure that visitors have every opportunity to experience live concerts by renowned musical talents from across the land.

Preservation Hall, Donna's and the world-famous House of Blues showcase both local favorites and world famous bands on a regular basis. If the kids are along, they'll thrill to the Batman ride at Six Flags New Orleans, Storyland Children's Fairy Tale Park, or just strolling through the Haunted Tour of the French Quarter. Adults can revel in the sights and sounds of Bourbon Street, including The Cat's Meow karaoke bar, and the awe-inspiring Pat O'Brien's where one can enjoy their celebrated Hurricane drink, and watch water shoot out of the ground and burst into flame in the back courtyard. For those who are looking for tamer entertainment, New Orleans houses the Audubon Zoo, Harrah's New Orleans Casino, the Musee Conti Wax Museum, and the only U.S. Mint that printed money for both the U.S. and the Confederacy.
Creole catfish and red beans and rice are local fare when it comes to dining, but for those who want more the city boasts restaurants of inexplicable taste, including the Court of Two Sisters, Bella Luna, which overlooks the Mississippi River, and the one and only Emeril Lagasse's own restaurant. Bam!! No Steeped in mythical folklore, be sure to visit New Orleans's cemeteries, and pick up a voodoo doll for that special someone before you leave for home. You never know when it might come in handy!

Poker Lingo For Amateurs

by: John Harding
The World Series of Poker has sprouted many followers in the last couple of years. Amateur tables are popping up all over the world and friendly cash games are everywhere come Friday night. Whether it is for thrill or profit the so called sport of poker has the attention of many onlookers year round. While Amateurs know the basics of the game they usually get lost in all the poker lingo spoken at the casino poker tables. While some is lingo is made up by experienced players to throw off the amateurs, some are actually well known terms in the poker world that any amateur trying to make it big should know. Below is a guide to all the poker lingo you could ever want to impress your friends or intimidate an experienced opponent. Take a look.

Ante: The initial money thrown into the pot to induce betting. This is done before the flop.
All In: When a person decides to put all his chips in to bet on a certain hand. No Limit Hold’Em is the most popular game and All Ins are allowed as many times as a player wants. In Limit Hold’Em you cannot bet more then the pot itself.
Backdoor: Backdoor is a reference to when players are chasing a card that has not come up yet but has a good chance to. Having 4 cards of the same kind is a backdoor flush draw, having four cards in a row is a backdoor straight draw.
Bad Beat: A Bad Beat occurs when a player has a large advantage over the other and the last card beats the big hand by luck. Bad beat is usually used to imply that the player with the weak hand should not have been in the hand at all and it was by mere luck that he won his underdog hand.
Blind: In Texas Hold’Em, the game uses blinds instead of antes. The blinds are forced bets to induce some money in the pot by the two people sitting to the left of the dealer. The first person to the left of the dealer is the “small blind” and bets a smaller amount. The second person to the left of the dealer is the “big blind” and bets twice what the small blind has.
Bottom Pair: The lowest pair out of the cards out on the table.
Check: When a player decides to not bet he calls “Check”. This is the option of betting zero dollars.
Check Raise: When a player checks with a strong hand hoping another opponent will raise. The player then re-raises with his strong hand thus getting more money out of his opponent in the pot.
Drawing Dead: When a player is trying to make a hand that will still not win the pot.
Flop: The first three cards that are “flopped” onto the table. These are also called community cards.
Heads Up Play: When there are only two players playing a certain hand they are considered “heads up”.
Muck: A pile of unused cards usually in front of the dealer. These come from folded or burned cards. To “much your cards” is to fold them by throwing them into the muck pile.
The Nuts: Likely the favorite expression of any poker player. The Nuts indicates a hand that is mathematically unbeatable with the cards on the table.
Offsuit: When the two cards you are dealt are of different suits.
Pocket: The two cards dealt to you in Texas Hold’Em that only you can see.
Rake: The total amount of money that the casino’s dealer takes out of every pot.
The River: The last card to be flopped on the board. The 5th card to come out in a Texas Hold’Em game.
Short Stack: The short stack is referring to the player with the least amount of chips at the table.
Tell: A tell refers to a players action when he or she has a good or bad hand. Some players take off their sun glasses when they have a bad hand. Other players tend to itch their right hand when they have a good hand.
The Turn: The fourth card to be flopped onto the table in a Texas Hold’Em game.
These are the necessary terms in order to keep up with the pros. There are hundreds of other terms in the world of poker, yet they are much less needed or too experienced for the amateur. Learn this lingo and impress your friends or play at experienced tables and wow the crowd. Lastly, poker is a great game, but the greatest player in poker knows one this: When to know you’re beat. Everyone likes to hold’em, but sometimes you get that feeling and you just have to fold’em.

A Cruise Through Royal Caribbean’s History

by: Lucky Balaraman
* Introduction *
Ever heard of a luxury hotel that moves every half hour?
You guessed it: it’s a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, a mass of one hundred thousand tons, that glides on the ocean between Florida and the islands of the Caribbean on a regular basis.

Royal Caribbean International is the second largest cruise ship operator in the world with revenues in excess of $4 billion. It owns 28 ships with more than 65,000 berths on them and is growing. Here’s their story.
Flash back to 1969. An idea suddenly struck Arne Wilhelmsen and Edwin Stephan (Arne was a Harvard-educated investor and Edwin a famous Floridian businessman). The idea was that there was a large community of extremely wealthy Americans in Florida, and that this community would put down top dollar for a short, relaxing luxury cruise to the nearby Caribbean.
Arne and Edwin marketed this brainwave to some of the shipping magnates in Norway who readily bought it and came up with large investments. After a short gestation period, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines (and an entire new industry) was born.
By the next year (1970), the infant company could speak of it’s first possession: The SONG OF NORWAY, a splendid cruise ship, weighing 18,500 tons and equipped for 700 passengers, custom-built in Finland. The most stunning feature of it was a cocktail lounge cantilevered around the smokestack (Edwin Stephen got the idea from the Seattle Space Needle). This lounge was built into many of the Line’s later ships and became the hallmark of the Company’s fleet.
* Growth, Growth and More Growth *
The founders of the Company pursued their vision of achieving market dominance through a continual program of adding ships and services. A consolidated record of this, which is very difficult to find elsewhere in the media, is presented below:
1971
Cruise ships NORDIC PRINCE and SUN VIKING arrive
1978
SONG OF NORWAY cut in half, 75-foot piece with 164 cabins introduced in between
1980
NORDIC PRINCE augmented the same way
1982
SONG OF AMERICA arrives with a larger, more luxurious lounge around the smokestack
1988
SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, the largest cruise ship ever built at 73,162 tons for 2,276 passengers, arrives at a cost of $150 million
1990
- NORDIC EMPRESS arrives
- The Company expands beyond the Caribbean: Mexico, Alaska, and Europe are added as destinations;
- Industry’s first computerized booking system introduced
1991
- MONARCH OF THE SEAS arrives, ready for 2,354 passengers
1992
- MAJESTY OF THE SEAS delivered, equipped for 2,354 passengers
1993
- The Company goes public
1995
- LEGEND OF THE SEAS arrives, built for 1,804 passengers
1996
- GRANDEUR OF THE SEAS arrives at 74,000 tons and for 2,440 passengers
- SPLENDOUR OF THE SEAS, in the same class as GRANDEUR, delivered
1997
- Name changed to Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (RCCL)
- RCCL purchases Celebrity Cruises and its four working ships from Chandris Lines at a cost of $1.3 billion
- RHAPSODY OF THE SEAS, at 79,000 tons and for 2,435 passengers, is delivered
- ENCHANTMENT OF THE SEAS, at 74,000 tons and for 2,440 passengers, arrives
1998
- Enter VISION OF THE SEAS, 79,000 tons and to carry 2,435 passengers
- Joint ownership agreement signed with Chicago’s Pritzker family (that has $15 billion in assets) and Haifa’s Ofer family (that owns one of the world’s largest shipping companies, Ofer Brothers Shipping Co)
1999
- VOYAGER OF THE SEAS comes in at a whopping 140,000 tons for 3,114 guests
2000
- EXPLORER OF THE SEAS arrives; in the VOYAGER class, it has marine laboratories on board as well
2001
- ADVENTURE OF THE SEAS arrives: 3,114 passengers accommodated per cruise
- RADIANCE OF THE SEAS delivered: 2,100 passenger capacity at 90,000 tons, with gas turbines, it is the first in it’s class
- The company purchases 20% of UK tour operator First Choice and launches a joint venture cruise line. It offers land-based tours in Alaska through Royal Celebrity Tours.
2002
- BRILLIANCE OF THE SEAS, a vessel in the RADIANCE class, arrives and is ready for duty
2003
- SERENADE OF THE SEAS, the third RADIANCE class vessel, is delivered
2004
JEWEL OF THE SEAS, RADIANCE class, makes its debut
… and of course, more ships, even larger that the earlier ones, are on order!
* Conclusion *
With revenues in excess of $4 billion, RCCL is a juggernaut which will not slow down.
Its ships are floating cities, boast amenities such as rock climbing walls, miniature golf courses, swimming pools, ice skating rinks, sun decks, basketball courts, beauty salons, exercise and spa facilities, gaming facilities, lounges, bars, cabaret performances, cinemas, shopping arcades, multiple restaurants and casinos.
Most importantly, when on a cruise, one experiences some priceless bonuses: unpolluted air and a virtually noise-free environment. These are truly, in the modern context, balm for the soul.
If you can afford the entirely reasonable average fare of $400 per person for a 3-night cruise in a luxury stateroom… don’t think twice about it, sign up for a cruise and gain the experience of a lifetime!

Enjoy a Fun Vacation by Taking a Cruise

by: Rajam Smith
Take A Cruise For The Vacation Of Your Life!
Vacations can be fun, however often times they can wear down your energy level and be less relaxing then you had anticipated. Many vacationers look forward to coming back home. The cost of attractions and eating out begin to outweigh the fun of the vacation.
A great way to avoid vacation burnout is to take a cruise. Cruise vacations have become popular as cruise lines are building bigger cruise ships each year. Taking a cruise has become the experience of millions that want a relaxing, fun filled vacation.
Cruises tend to be centered around food and attractions. The food is scrumptious, plentiful, and made by the best chefs. On a cruise the meals usually included. This is wonderful because you eat great food and know ahead of time how much you had to pay to eat out. If you don't go on a cruise then you have to think about where to eat each day which can be time consuming and costly.
It depends on the cruise line, but many cruises supply you with a plethora of entree selections at each meal. You can eat as much or little as you want as every part is included. Cruise line food isn't fast food either, it is fancy filet mignon, lobster, and tasty food. You don't have to waste time and effort worry about racking up the dinner bill because the cost is already included in the cost of your cruise vacation package.
A vacation aboard a cruise ship also offers a wide variety of entertainment options. A lot of people just think about people lounging around crowded pools while on a cruise. While this is certainly an option, many cruise lines also offer nightly shows, casinos, and swinging night clubs for their guests.
While you can have a great time on the cruise ship, you can also have a blast taking day trips at each port. These day trips vary from shopping and sightseeing to tours and sports such as scuba diving. You can explore exotic locations that offer many interesting adventures. You can discover the destination on your own or with a guided activity from the cruiseline.
When taking a vacation cruise comes to mind you may think that they are made for just couples. Far from it. Cruises can be enjoyed by families, singles, and anyone at any age. Cruise lines have expanded their social offerings in recent years to excite people of all backgrounds. Parents can leave their kids off with staff for adventure camps while the parents spend time on their own. These services are a real bonus to any family.
Cruise line vacations are a way to bring some fun back into your time away from work and make you wish you had more time to enjoy all of the amenities offered. They are available year around and offer an affordable means of getting away from the stresses of life and just have fun for a change. Before deciding upon your next vacation, be sure to check into a cruise because they are the biggest bang for your vacation buck offered!

New Jersey Camping & You: Perfect Together

by: Eric Stephenson
Why the heck would I want to go camping in New Jersey?
I get asked that question just about every single day and I'm pretty tired of it after all these years. So I'm going to answer that question right here for the last time.
There are literally hundreds of reasons to go camping in New Jersey, but there is one large, and I mean really large, reason:

Where else in the country can you drive less then 3 hours and go from the mountains, to the shore, to the marshlands, to 3 different major metropolitan areas to several major lakes and everywhere in between?
Camping in New Jersey is literally the best of all worlds. There is just about nothing you cannot do while you camp in New Jersey. You have your choice of over 120 campgrounds and State Park facilities to choose from not to mention thousands of acres of public land to explore.
Just about every one of the privates campgrounds in the state have craft activities, pools, fishing ponds, sports activities and so many other amenities I can't even count. Most of them are clean, modern and well suited to just about any type of camping. They are all within a decent driving distance of dozens of cultural, sports, historical, recreational and children related attractions.
Canoeing, hiking, biking, birding and unlimited recreation activities can also be found at campgrounds around the state and many sites are within a short drive of some of the state's premium attractions and fabulous Atlantic Ocean beaches and boardwalks.
New Jersey is literally a kaleidoscope of natural, picturesque landscapes filled with some of the best and exciting camping experiences anywhere in the Northeast part of the country. Personally I think camping here in New Jersey is as good, if not better, then just about anywhere in the country.
More than 25,000 sites/cabins/yurts/rental trailers await your visit, sites of all shapes and sizes that can accommodate campers with everything from tent sites to pop-ups to fully equipped RVs.
From the Delaware Water Gap to a view of the Statue of Liberty to wooded campgrounds in the Pine Barrens to the sandy beaches of the Jersey Shore, the ideal camping experience is close at hand.
No matter what type of camping you choose, tenting, RVing or cabin rentals, New Jersey has something for you. Pick a region to begin investigating where you want to camp:
Atlantic - It's no wonder the Atlantic Region is one of the country's most popular tourist destinations. Atlantic City and its world-famous beach and boardwalk, luxurious casino, non-stop gaming action, the hottest entertainers, the best in dining, and quality sporting events. New Jersey Camping in the Atlantic Region gives you access to this great area!
Delaware - It's where history was made. And where nature rules. It's where the arts come alive and stately mansions reign. New Jersey's Delaware River Region is all of these and more. It's a unique region that can provide you with many things to do and see on your next vacation. New Jersey Camping and you, perfect together!
Gateway - Live with action, the Gateway Region has everything for your perfect vacation including New Jersey Camping activities, New Jersey State Parks and New Jersey Campgrounds.
Shore - Mention the Shore Region, and certain images immediately come to mind: more than 60 miles of pristine beaches from Sandy Hook down to Holgate; surfcasting off Seaside Park; perhaps some bodysurfing off Bay Head; or maybe a moonlit walk in Surf City. Anything you want can be found in New Jersey Camping.
Skylands - Gentle mountains. Skiing. Rock climbing. Horseback riding.Would you believe you're in New Jersey? New Jersey Camping and you, perfect together!
Southern Shore - Walk along 30 miles of wide sandy beaches. Experience the warmth of a Victorian inn. Take a stroll through history or enjoy the fresh bounty of the sea at a gourmet restaurant. New Jersey Camping offers a wide variety of ways to take advantage of this area.
So, whether it's a cabin by a lakeshore, an RV minutes from the Statue of Liberty or just a sleeping bag amidst the rugged mountain wilderness, New Jersey Camping is perfect for you.

Parador of Hondarribia

by: Gary Bumpas
The Parador of Hondarribia is near the French border just a short distance from San Sebastian, and within easy visiting distance of Bilbao and the wonderful Guggenheim museum.
Parador Hondarribia is a 10th century castle built by the King of Navarre in the early days of the Christian re-conquest. The powerful Caliph, Al-Mansur, was a constant threat to the area in the those times, but King Sancho Abarca and the castle at Hondarribia were spared because the King had given one of his daughters in marriage to the Caliph - there have always been advantages to "keeping it all in the family!"

The castle was remodeled in the 16th century by Emperor Charles the Fifth. Napoleon stayed here for some time during the wars between Spain and France and many other notable figures in the history of Spain and Europe have stayed here as well.
The Parador of Hondarribia is situated on the banks of the Bidasoa estuary and provides beautiful views out to the sea. This is every bit the castle people imagine castles to be with its monolithic stone walls (still pockmarked by cannon-fire from old wars), and interior decorations of medieval armor, weaponry and tapestries. The Parador contains many charming nooks and corners perfect for quiet sitting, reading and intimate conversation.
Interesting nearby excursions from Parador Hondarribia:
-  The fishermen's area of the waterfront, and the La Marina quarter.
- The wonderful castle at San Telmo.
- Nuestra Señora de la Asunción y Manzano parish church, Gothic 15-16th c.
- Calle Mayor and Plaza de Guipúzcoa (admire the many stately houses).
- There are nearby golf courses, and plenty of opportunities for diving, sailing, surfing and fishing.
Interesting day trips include:
- Pamplona - Parador Hondarribia is a good place to find accommodations during the Fiesta San Fermin (running of the bulls) when they are nearly impossible to get in Pamplona itself.
- Bilbao - the Guggenheim museum is a "must see."
- Rioja wine country - visit the wineries and vinyards along the Ebro river near Logrono.
- Biarritz and Bayonne - wonderful beaches, casinos and nightlife.
The Hondarribia Parador does not have a restaurant, but there are fine restaurants within a short distance, and the cuisine of this area of Spain is renowned. A well, the fascinating city of San Sebastian is only a few miles away, and it has some of the finest restaurants in all of Spain. The Parador does serve a buffet breakfast in a wonderful little dining room overlooking the water.
For intrepid travelers visiting north central Spain or Southwestern France - the Parador of Hondarribia makes a historically fascinating and culturally interesting place to stay for a night - or for a week of nights!

Austria Off The Beaten Path – Zell Am See, Innsbruck and Bad Gastein

by: Rick Chapo
Mention Austria and everyone thinks of Vienna and Salzburg. In addition to great names, Zell am See, Innsbruck and Bad Gastein are great locations off the beaten path.
Zell am See
Zell…am…See. The name just rolls off the tongue, but it pails in comparison to the place. Often described as heaven on earth, Zell am See is a dream location in the mountains of Austria. With towering mountains on one side and a lake on the other, the town looks like something out of a postcard.
If you pull up photographs of the town, you’ll swear they have been touched up with a software program. This town is simply that beautiful. In the winter, Zell am See is all about skiing with numerous resorts for glacier skiing. In the summer, one can lounge on a boat on the lake or hit the mountains for hiking, camping and rock climbing. The Krimml Waterfalls are extremely impressive. Zell am See isn’t the cheapest of travel destinations, but it should top the list if money isn’t a concern. The best month to go is December when skiing is good and winter festivals occur in the town.
Innsbruck
Built on the Inn River, Innsbruck was the home to the 1976 Winter Olympics. And for good reason. As with much of Austria, the town is picturesquely set against mountains and ripe with street cafes and surrounding areas that look like something out of the movie Heidi. As the Olympic designation would suggest, the town is a good launching point for hitting the slopes, but there is much more to it. The historic district has the cobblestone atmosphere you’ve come to expect from town in the Alps. In addition to atmosphere, you can visit historic locations such as the tomb of Emperor Maximilian 1.
My only gripe with Innsbruck is the boring, modern developments around the core of the town that were brought on by the Olympics. They sort of kill the mood, which brings us to Bad Gastein.
Bad Gastein
Bad Gastein definitely gets a nomination for name of the year. It just sounds like a town where bikers would hang out. Admittedly, it is hard to image Austrian Hells Angels, but you get my drift.
Bad Gastein is an old Austrian village without the droll modern fixtures of Innsbruck. Built overlooking a valley, the town has some incredible views. Historically, Bad Gastein is the spa town of Austria with emperors and other VIPs taking in treatment. For atmosphere, the town feels like it hasn’t changed since the 19th century. If you’re looking for old world Austria, this is the place. Make sure to hurry though as the town is supposedly grabbing the attention of developers who are thinking hotels and casinos are a must.
If you visit Austria, Vienna and Salzburg are definite destinations. Just make sure you get out to the incredible towns in the mountains.

Poker – A Social Thing

by: Adel Awwad
There is a very good reason why people enjoy a regular poker game with their friends and work colleagues. It is fun. It is relaxing. It is social. It is an excuse to eat sandwiches and chips and forget about trivial things like bills and pressures at work. Whether you bet with chocolates, peanuts, cat food coupons, your spare change or a bankroll, poker is a social thing.

The problem with the weekly poker game is that it is only weekly. Being able to escape into that alternate world where the only thing that matters is the game should happen more often than that, shouldn't it? Great news: it can. When you play online poker at Internet casinos, a great poker game is only a few clicks away, anytime of the day or night. And there are always real people out there playing with you, so you can maintain that same social feel in an Internet casino.
Online poker games are a great means of escape. Much cheaper than most trips to Las Vegas or Atlantic city, an Internet casino is an inexpensive way to enjoy something you usually have to wait for all week, or in the case of a real Las Vegas vacation – all year for. No more vying for that boring company conference in Las Vegas just so you can hit the tables. At an Internet casino you can play online poker and enjoy yourself without having to worry about making any meetings!
Meet new friends or get to know the regular players at your favorite Internet casino. Online poker is a great way to socialize from the comfort, privacy and safety of your own home; and hey – all your drinks are on the house! So, what are you waiting for? Get involved in an online poker game today!

A Winning Roulette System

by: Adel Awwad
Roulette is considered t be one of the most popular casino games in the world. It tends to draw players from all types of backgrounds. Being a relatively simple game to understand while offering a diverse range of betting options and payout outcomes is what makes Roulette such a big hit with the players. Roulette is also considered to be one of the casino's biggest money makers because it tends to place the odds in favor of the casino. Whether one is placing bets on an American Roulette Wheel which has 38 numbers (0, 00, 1-36), or on a European Roulette Wheel which has 37 numbers (0, 1-36), the odds are usually in favor of the casino, especially if one places bets such as a straight up bet (a bet covering one single number) or a split bet (a bet covering two numbers). Of course there are other types of bets which will increase the odds in the player's favor such as a dozen bet (a bet covering twelve numbers), or an odd or even bet (a bet covering eighteen numbers), but covering eighteen numbers out of a possible 37 or 38 still places the odds in favor of the casino.

Having tried many different betting systems, I finally found one that places the odds in favor of the player, is very simple to understand and does not carry a large degree of risk as far as losing one's money is concerned. If the aim of the player is to cover as many outcomes as possible while increasing the chances of winning, then this may be one Roulette system that is worth a try. Being a low risk system, the payout from a win is only 3 to 1, but the odds are 63.16% in favor of the player in an American Roulette game and 64.86% in favor of the player in a European Roulette game.
The logic of the system is as follows: By placing two Dozen bets of equal amounts, the player is essentially covering 24 numbers which is over 60% of the total numbers on the wheel. The chances of losing the bet are between 35.13 % and 36.84% which is far lower than a Column bet or Colored bet. If the winning number falls in one of the two Dozen bets, then the player will receive three credits for the two credits wagered.
For example, let us assume that you have placed a bet of $10 on the numbers 13 - 24 and another $10 bet on the numbers 25 - 36. Now you have covered over 60% of all the numbers and if you win, you will be ahead by $10. As mentioned earlier, the returns may not be high (depending on how much money is wagered), but the chances of winning each bet tend to be higher than usual.

Casino Games – Blackjack

by: Adel Awwad
Whether you're new to casino gaming or a casino veteran, blackjack is one of the simplest and most fun card games casinos have to offer. The objective in blackjack is to beat the dealer by getting a hand as close to 21 as possible without going over. To play casino blackjack, you need only a basic understanding of the rules and a desire to have fun.

So how do you reach 21? In blackjack, the cards have values. Number cards two through ten are counted at face value, while all face cards (King, Queen and Jack) are worth ten points. The ace is a special card in blackjack: you decide whether it’s worth one or eleven points. Since casino players are dealt two cards to start, if you get an ace and a face card or ten, you have 21—an instant win, as long as the dealer doesn't get 21 as well. This two-card winning hand is called a “blackjack”; hence the name of the game!
Casino rules for blackjack are basically the same at all casinos. After you get your first two cards, your options are to hit, stand, double down, split, or sometimes surrender. Hit means to take another card; stand means to keep what you have. A double down means you will double your bet in exchange for taking only one more card (you can draw up to five cards in blackjack). If your first two cards are the same value, you can split, or separate them and play each card as a different hand. Not all casinos offer the option to surrender, which means you would withdraw from the hand and receive half your bet back.
When you play blackjack at a casino, be sure to know which table to choose. Most casinos have color coded blackjack tables according to the minimum bet the table accepts, usually $3, $5, $25 or $100. In any casino, it’s a given the $3 and $5 tables will be crowded, but they’re great for beginners at casino games because all of the cards are dealt face-up, as opposed to the one-up, one-down method at higher tables. So the next time—or the first time—you visit a casino, make a stop at the blackjack tables and aim for 21!

Different Size Clay Poker Chips

by: Jake Johnson
There are many variations of poker chips in terms of style, weight and size on the market, but generally the ones that you see and use in the casinos are all made out of clay. Clay gives the poker chips certain feel and structure that adds a real presence, class and durability to the game of poker. 9 gram and 13.5 gram clay poker chips represent the high quality of poker chips that are available on the market today. Let’s examine these clay poker chips a little further in this article.

The clay poker chips that are used in casinos have certain requirements such as size, weight and quality. Manufacturers that sell chips to the general public make these chips of a very similar quality and upon the same guidelines as the authentic chips that are played on actual casino tables. This enables amateur and social players to have quality chips made by the best manufacturers, right in their own homes.
The normal clay chip size is 39 millimeters in diameter and weighs 11.5 grams. These are exact specifications so that each chip will be identical (unless of different color). The majority of Casinos, including those based in Vegas, tend to use chips between 9 gram and 13.5 grams according to their own needs. This keeps the chips uniform and easier to control and when different colors are used it helps players to differentiate their chips form their opponents.
There are many reasons that 13.5 gram clay is the substance preferred when it comes to poker chips. First of all, it gives the chips a solid and evenly spread weight. These chips feel smooth but heavy, and usually help players to remember the value of each chip. Clay can be imprinted to give a certain design or signature of owner which is usually what happens in Casinos – Casino branding is popular.
9g clay poker chips are professional grade poker chips that are perfectly and specifically designed to be exactly the same in style, texture, size and weight. Casinos pay a lot of money for the highest quality poker chips. These chips are custom made to have the design and look of that given casino. This is very important to all casinos; irrespective of their location.
Clay poker chips are special because they are all uniform and they look terrific. This means that they are exactly the same size and weight and the design and decorations are perfect. Abnormal chips are usually a sign of counterfeiting and fake chips from Casinos; therefore the manufacturers must be precise in their manufacturing processes. There is a lot of money riding on the quality of the chips and the level of difficulty that is applied to eradicating counterfeit practices.
Along with the size and weight, the outer coating of the poker chips is also quite important because this will prevent the decal from coming off if it is fiddled or deliberately tampered with. With high quality manufactured chips when the decal is removed, the chip should be ruined beyond repair. Therefore all clay poker chips are either played with when they are in their original state or they are removed from play altogether. It is neither easy nor cheap to produce such high quality chips but they really are a necessity for Casinos. Casinos must be confident with the quality and preservation of their chips which means that they are willing to put a lot into them.
But do not despair. Just because you are not a Casino does not mean that you cannot have casino quality 9 gram, 11 gram or 13.5 gram clay poker chips too. These chips are usually cheaper to the public because they do not have to pass through such stringent security guidelines. They will generally be made out of the same materials and taken through the same production process. And of course if you really want to, you can customize them to your liking, even with your own brand.

What Is A Good Weight For Poker Chips?

by: Johnny Hand
I have been playing poker since my college days. I went to a small school in western Massachusetts. The funny thing is back in those days we would use anything as poker chips. It was not uncommon for us to scrape our pennies together or even break open a bag of potatoes chips that we heisted from the dorm room across the hall to use as our poker chips. Well since then I have matured and in this article I will talk about 13.5g poker chips.

I highly recommend using 13.5g poker chips.13.5g poker chips are the heaviest chips available on the poker market today and are typically of the highest quality grade. These poker chips feel like casino quality chips because they usually are casino quality and are a ton of fun to play with. In fact, these chips are usually better then casino quality poker chips. Think about it a little. The companies that produce these chips have stiff competition and casinos would not pay that much money for the quality of the chips we get on the market! A typical casino uses the 11.5 gram chips that are 39mm in diameter.
The 13.5 gram chips are a little heavier and usually a stronger chip. Again I recommend these. For example, when you have your buddies over playing a tourney and they are dropping the chips on the floor and spilling beer on them. Figuring out what kind of poker chip to splurge on, especially if you play often is important too. Those of you who host poker games should make sure your chips can withstand the consistent handling. (see above about dropping on floor) 13.5g chips are perfect for regular players because the wear and tear that human hands place on chips can be a force. Poker chips are often handled aggressively, (everyone likes to shuffle them etc..) and the cheap ones just may fall victim to the trash can after a dozen games.
Your 13.5g poker chips will compliment your poker set nicely. Good poker supplies make a huge difference in the world. Don't ever even think about short changing your game if it is something you really like. Spend a few extra bucks to get something nice that will last you a lifetime.
You can find 13.5g poker chips pretty much anywhere now. I have seen them at casinos, novelty stores, gaming stores but more importantly online gaming stores. Online gaming stores are turning up all over cyberspace and will often provide you with far cheaper price options for your high quality poker chips. If you don't feel like hopping in your car and heading to a local store, then do yourself a favor and take a peek and see what you can find on the web. However, be careful, do some homework, and don't settle on a store that is not highly suggested by other poker nuts!
In conclusion, take your time when choosing your 13.5g poker chips. Do some quick research and find a reliable source for your poker chips and accessories. Make sure you find the cheapest price for the amount of chips your willing to purchase. So at your next poker tournament that you host you will look like a king and not a peasant!

Poker – Know Your Limits

by: Adel Awwad
Whether you’re playing poker in a casino with your chips right in front of you or playing an online poker game in an internet casino, it’s easy to get carried away when you’re betting. If you’ve had to hitchhike home from Las Vegas because you broke the bank or if you are on the verge of getting a divorce due to the fact that you can’t afford to pay the internet bill because of your internet casino habit, take the problem seriously. There are meetings and support groups available for you. Ask your doctor for help.

However, if your problem is a little less serious than that: you tend to get a little overzealous with your betting when stakes are high and the heat of the online poker game is at a boiling point, then here are a few things for you to try. You can have fun playing online poker without losing your shirt – or having to worry about money at all. All you need to do is set a few guidelines for yourself!
-Set a limit. Just like you might hand your credit cards and ATM card over to your best friend and go to a brick and mortar casino with a specific amount of cash in your pocket, so too should you go to an online casino, use your credit card for one specific amount and then put it away.
-Enjoy a free amateur game. If you’ve bet your limit but still feel like playing online poker, play a few free amateur games. Most internet casinos have plenty to offer. If you enjoy yourself, maybe the next time around, you’ll throw your money onto their online poker table.
-Keep track. By all means, don’t lose track of how many deposits you’ve made into your internet casino account. Just because you might forget doesn’t mean it didn’t happen!

Hello from Barcelona

by: Susanne Pacher
This is my first ever blog and I´ll have to be very brief since I only have about 11 minutes left at the Internet cafe. I am sitting here at the Maremagnum shopping mall in the port of Barcelona.
Theresa and I just came back from our tour on the blue Tourist Bus. (20 Euros for 2 days). What a fabulous city!

Yesterday we had dinner in the Gothic Quarter and got serenaded by one musician / music group after another. And today the bus tour, beautiful weather, brilliant sunshine, about 28 degrees Celsious.
We started in the port area, snaked our way past the Casino, the Olympic Village, the Zoo, through the Gothic Quarter to the hussle and bustle of Plaza Catalunya. Along the way we had a quick peak at Gaudi´s masterpieces: Casa Battlo and La Pedrera. The we came across the middle part of the city, up to the hill of Montjuic where we visited the Poble Espanyol (Spanish village), a beautiful 1929 replica of buildings from villages throughout Spain.
Then we passed the Olympic stadium, the Teleferic cablecar and came back down into the city where we are just starting to relax now in the harbour.
Tonight we´ll probably head up the Ramblas and check out some authentic Barcelona Nightlife.
